Solid Machine!

My first involvement with CNC gear was back in the 80's in the PCB fabrication industry. We used Excellon Automation for drilling and Paul Dosier Associates for routing. These old beasts used General Automation Spec 16/60 and 16/220 controllers running Slo-Syn paper tape readers. How I DON'T miss those days. Towards the end of that career, I was mainly in charge of keeping the gear up and running and calibrated. Always working with .0001" resolution, I really wasn't expecting much from these inexpensive, desktop machines...I was pleasantly surprised. After calibrating the steps for the motors and adjusting the acceleration and lead screw nuts, this little bugger sings. I'm getting excellent repeatability and positioning ±.001" over the full travel of each axis...I'll take it. Spindle runout is .00012", I'll take that too! Modern CAD/CAM software sure beats the old school, trig intensive programming back in the day. Design creation with Easel and machine interfacing through UGS are a breeze. My first cuts were for testing then spoil-board creation and then to acrylic. I also purchased the 5.5W laser and the integration and usage are fast and simple. This machine is very solid and predictable and cuts great. I don't have any experience with any other 3018 machines out there but from my experience with this one so far, I can't imagine there are any better. I've watched almost every 3018 video out there and most lack the features of this one. I would highly recommend this machine for anyone looking to get into CNC machining knowing that they have a solid foundation to learn on.
