Lunyee CNC 3018 Pro Max Unboxing Review – CNC Milling Machine with Add-On Laser Option

Lunyee CNC 3018 Pro Max Unboxing Review – CNC Milling Machine with Add-On Laser Option

Author: Derek Langford

As an independent reviewer, I recently tested the Lunyee 3018 Pro Max CNC machine with its 10W laser module. Over the past few weeks, I’ve put this compact CNC through various milling and engraving tasks to assess its build quality, setup process, and overall performance. In this review, I’ll share my detailed observations, key features, and practical insights for anyone considering this machine for personal projects or a small workshop.

Unboxing & First Impressions

The 3018 Pro Max comes neatly packaged with everything you need to start working right away. Inside, I found:

  •  A multilingual instruction manual
  • 32-bit control board
  • USB cable and 48V 11A power supply
  • 500W spindle with ER11 collet
  • Probe for zeroing the Z-axis
  • Emergency stop button and clamps for workpieces
  • Template for proper nut placement during assembly
  • Set of cutters and collet chuck
  • All necessary wires and a remote for standalone operation

The machine’s X/Z portal and Y-axis table arrive mostly pre-assembled. The build quality feels solid, with thick aluminum plates and structural profiles, making it clear this machine is built for precision and durability.

Easy Assembly Guide

Assembly is straightforward and beginner-friendly. Using the included template, I mounted the gantry, secured the legs, installed limit switches, and set up the emergency stop button. The spindle and collet were easy to install, and all wiring was clearly labeled.

I also checked the gantry’s perpendicularity with a square to make sure everything was properly aligned. The instructions and pre-labeled components make this machine approachable, even for someone new to CNC.

CNC Milling Performance

I started with aluminum nameplates. Using Artcam, I designed the plates and generated G-code programs. Since the 3018 Pro Max doesn’t support automatic tool changes, I used separate programs for engraving and cutting.

The included probe made setting the Z-axis zero fast and precise. Using the GRBL controller, I could track the cutter’s position in real time. Milling aluminum went very smoothly, although I swapped the included cutters for my own to reduce burrs. The final engraved nameplates were clean and professional after replacing the included cutters with higher-quality ones, showing the machine’s accuracy and reliability.

I also milled 8mm plexiglass, which the machine handled easily. By using double-sided tape for fixation and zeroing with a paper method, the milling process was smooth and precise.

Laser Module Performance

Switching to the 10W laser module was quick. I added a gentle air supply to protect the lens and improve cutting quality. Using the LightBurn software, I ran three key tests:

1. Engraving Test – optimized laser power and speed for clean results

2. Cutting Test – successfully cut 4.5 mm plywood at a maximum speed of 250 mm/min after several passes at full power.

3. Width Compensation Test – verified the laser beam width (~0.16 mm) for precise cuts

With these settings, I created custom signs, badges, and stickers. The laser performs well on wood and plexiglass, and can mark stainless steel surfaces. Thick or high-carbon rubber was more challenging, but overall, the laser module is effective and versatile for small workshop projects.

Final Verdict & Who It’s For

The 3018 Pro Max is compact, lightweight, and easy to use. All controls are integrated into the frame, so no separate control box is needed. It is ideal for small workshop projects, offering both CNC milling and laser engraving in one machine.

Pros:

• Easy assembly with clear instructions

• Solid construction for precision work

• Performs well on aluminum, plexiglass, and wood

• Laser module enables accurate engraving and cutting

• Compact, lightweight, and user-friendly

Cons:

• Default cutters may leave burrs on aluminum

• Laser struggles with very thick or high-carbon materials

• May require minor setup adjustments

For anyone interested in CNC milling or laser engraving, the Lunyee CNC 3018 Pro Max offers excellent performance and value, making it a top choice for hobbyists and small workshop enthusiasts.
