Exploring the 3018 Pro Ultra: An Entry-Level Desktop CNC Machine

Unboxing and First Impressions

We recently tested the 3018 Pro Ultra, a small desktop CNC made for beginners and hobbyists. There are plenty of options out there, but few balance reliability, ease of use, and flexibility as well as this one. In our hands-on experience, the 3018 Pro Ultra is simple, solid, and a great starting point for those new to CNC machining.

When we opened the box, we found the packaging to be very well organized. The kit comes with everything you need: a clear manual in several languages, screws and fasteners, basic tools, the main board, power supply, controller, cables, spindle, clamps, and a few starter bits. It also includes some handy extras like a cleaning brush and an axis probe. Everything is packed neatly and securely, so there’s little risk of anything getting damaged during shipping.

Assembly Made Simple

Putting the machine together is pretty straightforward and beginner-friendly. It comes partially preassembled, with the X and Z axis motors already mounted on the gantry and the Y axis motor on the base, which cuts down on setup time and reduces the chance of mistakes. The manual is clear, with helpful illustrations and step-by-step instructions, making it easy to figure out where each part goes.

We found the main steps — like attaching the feet, limiters, and the switch — to be simple and logical, which helps keep the machine stable and safe. Mounting the spindle is easy thanks to the snug casing, and installing the collet and bits only takes a few minutes. Cable connections are straightforward, with color-coded wires and a labeled diagram to guide you. Overall, assembling the 3018 Pro Ultra feels friendly for beginners while still keeping the machine solid and reliable.

Features That Impress

The 3018 Pro Ultra comes with several useful features for a machine at this price point:

A 500W spindle motor that can handle wood, MDF, plastics, and even light metals

An offline controller with a display, allowing operation without a computer

A 4GB memory card preloaded with test files for quick trial runs

An axis probe to help with precise jobs and automatic zeroing

We also liked the open layout of the motherboard and controller, which makes maintenance or future upgrades easy. The kit comes with starter bits and clamps, so you can start projects right away. Overall, these features make the machine very beginner-friendly, while still leaving room for more advanced work.

Testing and Performance

Using the preloaded files, the 3018 Pro Ultra performed well on small woodworking projects. Carvings were clean and even, nearly matching the results of higher-end machines on similar basic designs.

For custom projects, like engraving logos or small decorative items, the machine handled different materials well and produced professional-looking results with minimal setup. Manual operation is straightforward, allowing precise control over each step and providing hands-on experience with CNC machining for beginners.
