Lunyee 4040 Pro Review: Compact Desktop CNC Router with Optional Laser Engraving

Written by Logan Mercer

I recently tested the Lunyee 4040 Pro, a compact desktop CNC router that supports an optional 10 W diode laser for engraving. For hobbyists and makers, this 40×40 cm setup offers impressive versatility and precision—and at under $500 with current promotions, it delivers more capability than its size suggests. Having tried several entry-level CNC machines, this one immediately stood out.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The 4040 Pro arrived neatly packaged, with every component clearly labeled. Inside, you’ll find:

  • Assembly manual and user guide
  • Five types of cutting end mills
  • Optional 10 W diode laser module
  • Height gauge and assembly tools
  • USB key with GRBL-based Candle software

Much of the machine comes pre-assembled. The worktable is wooden, likely 10 mm MDF, with pre-installed inserts that make setup straightforward. Rails, cables, and protective plexiglass panels are included—front and back panels are magnetic for dust protection. Flexible cable covers, a small dust brush, and a power block are also included. All hardware is neatly organized in a rigid box.

Compared to other entry-level desktop CNC machines, this one looks more refined. Thoughtful cable management and clearly marked sides make the assembly process smooth and stress-free.

Build Quality and Features

Out of the box, the 4040 Pro feels solid and stable. Its 10 mm MDF worktable provides a reliable surface, while pre-installed inserts help with precise project alignment. The standard 100 W motor handles small engraving bits easily, and the optional 500 W motor allows for larger router bits and more demanding CNC milling projects.

The optional 10 W diode laser adds a valuable dual-function capability. Despite its compact size, it is powerful enough to cut up to 3 mm plywood effortlessly at just 40% power, making it perfect for small engraving projects. Once installed on the magnetic base, the software automatically detects the laser module—a feature that’s uncommon in GRBL-based desktop CNC systems. Switching between milling and laser engraving is completely seamless.

This machine is also well-suited for small-scale projects and hobby applications, making it an excellent hobby CNC machine. Thanks to pre-installed inserts and intuitive software, even beginners can achieve precise results consistently.

Assembly and Setup

I assembled the 4040 Pro alone in about 40 minutes. Pre-routed cables, pre-installed components, and magnetic panels simplified the process. Installing the optional laser module was straightforward: it connects to a 12 V port, and the Candle software recognized it automatically. Height adjustment for both milling tools and laser is easy, ensuring precise operation without trial and error.

The only minor limitation is engraving speed. The diode laser tops out at 5,000 mm/min, which is slower than a CO₂ laser but sufficient for most DIY projects. Running the laser at 90–95% power helps extend its lifespan.

Performance

Engraving on plywood and other materials produced sharp, detailed results—even at lower power. Complex designs, such as dragons, were cleanly completed in a single pass. The 4040 Pro handled small to medium CNC milling projects smoothly, remaining stable at higher speeds with consistent repeatability.

Switching between milling and laser modes is effortless. Magnetic panels allow larger workpieces, and pre-installed table inserts ensure consistent setups for repeat projects. Reducing speed and power for finer engraving still produced precise and clean results, highlighting the machine’s versatility as a compact desktop CNC router.

The included Candle software (GRBL-based) is free and easy to use. Setup was simple: select the correct USB port, input tool height, and the software handles the rest automatically. This combination of intuitive software and thoughtfully designed hardware makes it highly user-friendly, even for beginners.

Value and Verdict

For under $500 with current promotions, the Lunyee 4040 Pro offers a compact, dual-function desktop CNC and optional laser system that is precise, easy to assemble, and versatile. While it’s not a high-end CO₂ laser, it’s an excellent value for hobbyists, makers, or small-scale projects looking for both milling and engraving in one machine.

Overall, this machine exceeded my expectations. Solid build, thoughtful design, and smooth operation make it a standout in its class. Small footprint, big capabilities—this CNC milling setup proves that high versatility doesn’t require a high price.
